Thank you to those who have continued to share.  I am very sorry to hear that so many health issues are continuing with this breeder.  It's obvious to me that the males and females being used to breed have health issues they're passing along.  On top of this the puppies from what I know are not properly socialized for their first 8 weeks. At least this was the case around the time we adopted our PWD as I was informed by a previous worker with Pam.

I feel compelled to tell my story as I have pretty much an identical situation to Denise our dog from bay port is eight turning nine and has bit me and my son in law recently twice. . And is aggressively attacking other dogs with no provocation. He is not right simple as that. We have tried for eight years to deal with his anxiety and have loved him through it all. We plan on taking him to the vet tomorrow to see if there is something else physically wrong. Part of me hopes there is to explain his behaviour which is growing so much worse. I do blame the breeder. She is a deceitful piece of work. This is our second porty as an aside our first died of cancer. A truly wonderful dog from a different breeder. We called her and brought home a re homed puppy she and her kids she said called pirate. You want to know why he was blind in one eye we found this out when we took him to the vet for shots!, When we finally got hold of her after constant phone calls e mails she said she did not know!! We lived on property and paid all that money for a dog who was blind in one eye and we wanted our money back! she would not give us our money back but took the dog back and would gave us a pup from her next litter. The dog who just attacked a dog for no reason last night. And everyone from my kids to our friends think is crazy. It’s like a switch goes off and he can’t control himself. So for all of you who have been extolling Pam’s virtues good for you. This however is my very true story.

After not using the Email related to this account for almost 2 years I have reactivated it. Sorry for unanswered emails. I've been urged to keep this blog going as the issues regarding Pam Headon Schleuter as a breeder continue to be a problem.

New Information received November 2013

Keep me anonymous please but it has come to my attention that this breeder isn't allowed to travel to the US.   Something to do with importing a dog improperly. It seems the dog ended up at the SPCA in Buffalo or Detroit or somewhere.

Important Rules to finding a Reputable PWD Breeder.....

1.  Check out the breeder with the closest PWD Rescue Organization.

2.  The breeder isn't doing this "to make money"!

 Serious and dedicated hobby breeders do not really expect to make a profit from selling puppies. They breed dogs for the enjoyment and pride that comes from producing high quality, happy, healthy puppies that become cherished family companions. These breeders acknowledge responsibility for each and every puppy produced and stand behind every dog they breed. (taken directly from the PWD Rescue Website)


3.  A CKC registration does not mean the breeder is reputable....the breeder basically has paid their fees to belong.

It has been brought to my attention that Pam has again changed her business name (see portion of email I received below) ....now operating as Willow Creek Water Dogs.  Please be assured this is the same business owner, with the same issues. 

"Bayport PWD's (Formerly Dry Dock PWD's) are now operating as Willow Creek PWD's.  Most kennels use their kennel prefixes as their standard bearer.  Obviously if a kennel has to change their name three times, one wonders why............."

As with any breed of dog you should check with that breeds rescue organization before purchasing your pet.  They know all of the reputable breeders and can steer you in the right direction, sadly we did not do this first.

Sadly, however there is one person who is not happy with her dog or my services. I would like to take this opportunity to address my side of this story publically. You are welcome to read her blog at http//problemswithbayportwaterdogs.blogspot.com Unfortunately the dog has been put on Prozac and apparently he is aggressive.

The dog was put on for only one month about a year ago.

The more time and work you put into anything the more successful the end result will be. True, temperament to a degree in all animals is partially inherited from their parents but equally if not more formative is the training and environment that animal live in.. The Portuguese Waterdog is a very intelligent working dog not suited for every family, I am the first to tell people this before the interviewing process even begins.

When it was brought to my attention that this family was experiencing difficulties I offered my advice and eventually offered to take the dog back for re-training and assessment as per my contract. The offer was denied. When things got more difficult for this family they called our home a couple times but I happened to be on my honeymoon.

This is an absolute lie.....ALL PHONE CALLS WERE NOT RETURNED, EMAIL WAS NOT ANSWERED and initially we just wanted to let Pam know that there was a problem with one of her dogs.  Any reputable breeder would want to know we thought.  NO ADVICE WAS OFFERED....AND NEVER WAS THERE AN OFFER TO TAKE BACK OUR DOG FOR RE-TRAINING AND ASSESSMENT.

Consequently out of frustration I am sure their blog was posted. In the beginning it received many angry postings from all kinds of people who know and love my dogs. Also many people responded in anger who knew that a family pet should never be on Prozac! Many people who knew the dogs and knew my breeding program replied with corrections and the truth. Many people who knew Rosie know that she did not have 8 litters in 9 years. That is ridiculous if not impossible. My females have 3 litters and then retire and live with families, in fact almost all my dogs live in homes and are loved by their families. When such favourable positive replies flooded in to their blog they were blocked and continue to be blocked .

The only replies "blocked" on my blog were the ones attacking me as a person....if you look there are comments on there still that are favourable.

At this time all correspondences from myself my husband and my lawyer are not returned. I am concerned about the well being of this dog and think the best thing for him is for him to be returned to me.

THE ONLY CORRESPONDENCE I RECEIVED WAS FROM HER LAWYER  demanding that I take down my Blog due to false statements to which I requested clarification as to which statements specifically were false and received no follow-up. Again no responses were received from Pam or her Husband (other than through Lawyer) and NEVER was there an offer to take our dog back.

Everyone meeting my dogs love them for their friendliness and affectionate and happy nature. PWDs are not known for having allergies and I suspect his chewing of his paws is a nervous disorder not naturally occurring in PWDs.

Some Progress

Finally a few months ago we found a local Dog Trainer that is truly experienced with aggressive dogs.  He has been great in working with our Porty.  We are seeing improvements, slowly but we are happy that things are moving in a positive direction.  Our Trainer also takes both our dogs for two days a week in his Doggy Daycare and this helps to continue his training.  We have had to resort to using the muzzle in our home so that we can manage answering the door without being bitten.  Although it is removed at bedtime, when we are gone from the house (without dogs) and in the evening when no one is likely to come to the door.  Having the muzzle on allows us to be assertive and in charge of the situation without the concern of being bit.  We are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel with our 5 year old.

Rosie passed away at 8 Years of age

We recently learned that our dog's Mother has passed away and the reason is unknown. I suspect that it could be due to welping 7 litters in her mere 8 years.

Again another falicy.....we were told by Pam that the litter our dog was from was Rosie's 3rd litter and would be her last!

Poor thing must have been just worn out!

Tons of Research was done before adopting a PWD

For those who have the idea (comments made) that we did not Research the Breed before deciding to have a PWD as a pet couldn't be more wrong!
We did months of research on a few breeds before narrowing it down to this breed.

My husband is a very experienced dog owner and has worked very hard (as well as me) at training our dog, giving him lots of exercise and lots of attention. We have also hired professionals to help with behaviour modification and continued education on dog training.

We also DO NOT plan on re-homing our dog (thank you to those who offered help in this area) he truly is a member of our family and will remain that way. We have no plans on giving up on him, I made the comment about him living on a farm because I thought he would be happier (not us).

On a positive note.....he is a very loving dog, loves the water (of coarse), is happy in our home and has been excellent with his little brother (a Cockapoo) since day one.

Aggressive Problems Still happening.

Sadly even though our dog is still on medication we have only seen some improvement. We also have him on a Herbal Calming Powder that we buy from the doggie daycare that he sometimes attends. Most of the time my husband walks him (as he is stronger to handle him better), I do walk him a couple times a week but only with a muzzle on.

I truly feel he would do so much better if he lived on a farm or somewhere that gave him tons of exercise a day and "a purpose".

I am going to take him back soon to the Animal Communicator that I have taken him to in the past. I want to see what he has to say and if his attitude about being the "superior one" in the house, aka Alpha has changed.

Our Dog is a Pure Bred PWD

We have been able to confirm that our dog is a purebred PWD.

His medication seems to already be working (after only 6 days) as he has not been as challenging this week, so it looks hopeful that we have finally found something that is helping.

As time goes on we are learning more and more about Pam Schlueter and what certainly appears to be a lack of breeding ethics. We have been told that she is continuing to use dogs to breed that are either from an aggressive father or mother or who are aggressive themselves.

There have also been other reports (from PWD owners with dogs from Bayport) that there are other health issues beyond the aggression / biting problem. We know of one specific male who has IBD (Irritable Bowel Disease) that has greatly affected his health and cost their owners a large amount of money and conern.

It also seems to be common among these dogs that they have allergy issues. Our dog spends a lot of time chewing at his paws and rubs his face along furniture and walls, especially after eating. We have put him on the fish only food as suggested by our Vet, the food we have him on is made by Fromm's. The Vet indicated that the protein in chicken and beef is one of the more common allergies. We also ensure that any of his dog treats do not have these proteins in them.

FYI...we have learned that Pam Schlueter of Bayport Water Dogs is now remarried and using the name Pam Headon.

We have decided to try giving our dog medication as prescribed by our Vet. This decision does not come easily at all but we are willing to try it as so far nothing else has worked. Even our Animal Communicator has suggested this and she has not done so for any other dog in the past.

So...we will be monitoring our dog closely to see how he does with this medication. If there is no improvement after a few weeks we will take him off it. I so hope it helps though as he is so uptight and anxious most of the time.

We have been in contact with other PWD owner's who have also purchased a dog from Bayport Water Dogs (aka Pam Schleuter) and they too have had very similar aggression / biting issues with their dogs. So it looks like there is hope. Hope that we can all pool our information / resources and help others to make informed decisions.

There is also that possibility that our PWD is not a pure-bread. He may have been bred with a Barbet (French Water Dog) so my next step is to see if we can get a blood test done to determine what the case is. More money.....just another drop in the bucket compared to what we have spend to help our dog and our family.

We have recently learned more information about Pam Schlueter Owner and Operator of BayPort Waterdogs from a local Rescue.  Based on this information it is our strong opinion that she has been producing dogs that have very aggressive natures and strong biting tendencies.

We purchased a Pup from her and even though he is now almost 4 years old he continues to get more and more aggressive.

We tried contacting her in good faith to let her know there was a problem with one of her dogs, yet she just does not return calls. After several attempts we have given up. My husband then called the Portuguese Waterdog Rescue. We heard back from them right away. The news was not good. It turns out they know full well of Pam Schlueter and not in a good way. They know that she is notorious for not returning calls to anyone who has purchased one of her pups. They mentioned that 3 of her dogs have had to be PUT DOWN because of being so aggressive and biting. They are unable to help us with our dog as once they have a history of biting they cannot be placed to another home through the Rescue.

Please do your research before buying a dog from this breeder!!!

We have spend countless hours, a great deal of money and used many resources in attempts to train and manage our very difficult dog. Not to mention the emotional affects on our family and the many tears shed. So far he has bitten myself, my husband several times, my son, my daughter and two visitors to our home.

He is actually a very loving dog until you ask him to do something he doesn't want to do...or until someone (other than immediate family) comes to the door, or if he perceives you as a threat when we walk by on the street (which by the way he has a muzzle on when on walks).

We do not plan on putting our dog down....but have had to and will continue to have to for the rest of his life..be very careful that he is not in a situation where he could seriously harm someone.

I am not doing this blog to be vengeful...I am doing it in the hopes to save another family from going through the emotional turmoil that my family has and is going through.

There are other PWD breeders around and I implore you to do your research before you buy!
