Willow Creek Water Dogs....3rd time's a charm (NOT!!!)

It has been brought to my attention that Pam has again changed her business name (see portion of email I received below) ....now operating as Willow Creek Water Dogs.  Please be assured this is the same business owner, with the same issues.

"Bayport PWD's (Formerly Dry Dock PWD's) are now operating as Willow Creek PWD's.  Most kennels use their kennel prefixes as their standard bearer.  Obviously if a kennel has to change their name three times, one wonders why............."

I can't believe you are still doing this. Get a life. I have gotten 2 water dogs from Pam & have recommended her dogs to other people with fabulous results as well.

Pam & her dogs are both delightful & Pam herself is the VERY BEST dog breeder I have ever dealt with & I have owned a lot of dogs during my 30 years of marriage because we own multiple dogs.

You definitely need a hobby or maybe some volunteer work cause this truly is ridiculous.

I've ignored your blog because I didn't want to even acknowledge it but when I see it again it infuriates me. Cindy

Cindy,
I keep the blog up because what Pam did and is still doing "infuriates" me, not because I don't have a life, who is being ridiculous now.
I am being a responsible dog owner and don't want anyone else to go what we went through. If we also had responsible and trustworthy breeders I wouldn't have had the need to start this blog in the first place. I am happy to hear that you have not had any problems with her dogs but that simply is not the case for us and many others who have contacted me.

Harry said...

perhaps an issue with Revenue Canada? Has HST been remitted?

Anonymous said...

Yes indeed, it would appear that Pam has something to hide, or more likely she is hiding from unhappy customers. I have not heard of other breeders changing their kennel names, very disturbing, sets off alarms for me. She likely has not changed anything but the name. Willow Creek Water Dogs sounds like a breeder to avoid given the history and previous mentality of the breeder.

Suzanne,
What is it that you went through?

if you cant be specific in your comments and complaints, your are the one to be questioned. either fess up of what your complaints are , or just shut up! you sound like a trouble maker who has no life.

I am so glad you have started this blog. Many people are fooled about the temperments of Portuguese water dogs!!! These dogs are not your sweet temperament labs, and the breeders DO NOT want it out that these dogs have aggression issues! MANY of them do and were breed to guard the boats and are hard dogs. These are not for your typical family and the more loving you are to them the more dominant they are. It is very sad the breeders hide this and then when pet owners turn for help they are ATTACKED by the PWD community. So very sad for these dogs who are great dogs if you know what you are getting into. But shame on the breeders who turn on innocent Pet owners who love their dog!!!!!!!!

Suzanne said...

Thank you for making this very important point about the breed. It takes an experienced dog owner who does know the breed to make it work.

Suzanne: I live in Pickering and have a 4 year old PWD from Bayport. I love him dearly, but have had an awful time with aggression issues. He bit my husband quite badly yesterday and my husband has told me to get rid of him. I can`t give him to another family if he is a biter and I don`t know what to do. I would like to speak with you if possible as you seem to have managed to make it work with your dog.

Denise said. I am very sorry to hear about your situation Elizabeth. Our PWD purchased from DryDock kennel ( one of the first names) was 9 in October. He had become very aggressive towards other dogs and snarly towards people. We had him checked by our vet to ensure he was not in pain and rule out discomfort. Christmas Eve he bit a family friend with no warning. We did have him put down as we felt the risk was just too high. It was one of the hardest choices we have ever made because he was the sweetest most loving dog most of the time. Our vet called him Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. This was our second PWD, the other from another kennel. We do not know what happened but it seems odd that there is a potential theme here from this breeder. I can only say that as much as I mourn his lost I do have a sense of relief that he cannot do any more damage. After doing in depth research on breeders we know feel confident that with the right breeder we can and will move forward with a new puppy. Good luck with your guy. We would have sent ours to Ceasar if we could have got him there.

I find Pam to be a highly responsible and caring breeder. I am surprised at the mud slinging which is all too frequent among breeders. My guess this is more of a slam to steal clients than anything else.
My barbet is the best dog anyone has ever met . No issues - couldn't ask for a better animal. Easy to train, easy to care for. As with anything you get out what you put in. Hard to prove behavioral issue come from nature or nurture. Dogs require attention, understanding, training, daily exercise. If you do these things you'll have a great dog.
Mud slinging is just sad. If you have an issue I'm sure Pam would be happy to resolve it - ball up and talk to her. Take responsibility for the issue resolution.

Stay away from this breeder! She puts on a great act, but is one of the most dishonest people I have ever met. We had a horrible experience with her. Can't believe she is still in business.

To the person who wrote the last post from January, 2015 - we are considering purchasing a water dog from this breeder. Would you be willing to take this discussion offline and provide some additional information about your experience? Thanks in advance.

Hello, we have a PWD, Carlos, from Bayport born on July 10th 2010. He has always suffered from extreme allergies, and we have done everything we can to determine what they might be, aside from sending him to Guelph for thousands of dollars worth of testing. This week, we found out that he has a mass cancer cell on his hind leg, due to excessive histamine production. There is a chance that the cancer has spread, and we won't know until, the blood work comes back next week. Wondering if anyone else has a dog from the same litter, and/or have a porty with extreme allergies. What have you done to minimize the constant itching and potential for serious illness??

Oh yes certain breeders can be a huge part of the problem...how can you possibly say a breeder can never be at fault....that's like saying certain owners are not the problem.

That's how i see it as well. Never once did she offer to take back our dog when wet had huge issues....oh and that's if you actually get her to respond.

I feel compelled to tell my story as I have pretty much an identical situation to Denise our dog from bay port is eight turning nine and has bit me and my son in law recently twice. . And is aggressively attacking other dogs with no provocation. He is not right simple as that. We have tried for eight years to deal with his anxiety and have loved him through it all. We plan on taking him to the vet tomorrow to see if there is something else physically wrong. Part of me hopes there is to explain his behaviour which is growing so much worse. I do blame the breeder. She is a deceitful piece of work. This is our second porty as an aside our first died of cancer. A truly wonderful dog from a different breeder. We called her and brought home a re homed puppy she and her kids she said called pirate. You want to know why he was blind in one eye we found this out when we took him to the vet for shots!, When we finally got hold of her after constant phone calls e mails she said she did not know!! We lived on property and paid all that money for a dog who was blind in one eye and we wanted our money back! she would not give us our money back but took the dog back and would gave us a pup from her next litter. The dog who just attacked a dog for no reason last night. And everyone from my kids to our friends think is crazy. It’s like a switch goes off and he can’t control himself. So for all of you who have been extolling Pam’s virtues good for you. This however is my very true story.

We have a Barbet from Willow Creek. He is a great dog temperament wise however seems to have extreme allergies which we cannot seem to pinpoint. His food has been switched several times and he is now on a very expensive vet diet we don’t even know yet if that is helping as he still scratching. He is constantly scratching at his eyes until the hair is gone and he has had a cone on for several months now. Constantly has ear infections.. If I had seen this post earlier, we would not have gone with this breeder. She seems to have multiple litters, even more than one a month going. It just seems like a production line of dogs. I feel like she has so many litters that she doesn’t even know which dog is from what litter and Dogs do not get registered properly. I do wish we had researched the breeder more before going with her.

I'm on my second barbet from willow creek, the first one dying suddenly at 18 months. We decided not to pay for an autopsy and the breeder did not offer either. She replaced him with another puppy which has been itching for the last 6 months. We have been switching food and giving antihistamines, trying to determine if environmental allergies or food allergy. Being how it's now winter and she's still scratching, might be food. Next step will be the dermatologist...

We have had 2 barbets from this breeder: first one died suddenly at 18 mos, and he was replaced with a 10wk old that is now 1yr. For the last 6 months we have been trying to figure out her scratching: environmental or food. She has been on antihistamines. We have changed her feed a couple of times, purchased from the vet. She still gets 1/4 tab of Apoquel at bedtime so she can sleep comfortably. Next step is a dermatologist. I didnt know i was supposed to get documentation with my dogs; I'm working on getting that now...who knows what I'll get-

When we got our dog we were told we would Get a Canadian kennel club certificate showing that he is a purebred and showing who his parents are and what litter he came from. Same thing, a Barbet With extreme allergies.

It seems like most of the barbets from this breeder are experiencing extreme allergies. It’s very frustrating. We went from TLC to Natural Balance e land and brown rice to now abet food royal canin hp ( which is. Costing a fortune and we don’t even know if that was the problem ). we are trying him on this food exclusively for 12 weeks straight and then see what happens. It’s very frustrating and I feel really bad for my dog because he has had a cone on for months due to him scratching at his face and ears

Hi Everyone,

I purchased a PWD from Pam two years ago.
We noticed that our dog had been scratching and itchy obsessively and consistently from when we brought him home- he would scratch his ears so bad he would cry.
We took him to the vet, and the vet suggested some ear drops and to switch his food. This began a constant battle of trying to figure out what was going on with our puppy.
Just after our dog was 1 year old he began having grand mal seizures. They started 3 weeks apart where he would just have one 30 second seizure- but this eventually led to cluster seizures and closer together in time. After multiple trips to the vet, switching vets and food, as well as medication trials (thousands of dollars later)- we have finally after a full year of trials, hopefully have his seizures under control. The vet suggested that we try a NeuroCare pet food, which only led to more itching. Finally, after tons of research I thought maybe his seizures were linked to his allergies. That being said, we immediately switched to a strict raw diet in March of 2018. From March to August, he had no seizures. At the end of August was one incident where he got into a family dogs treats and had cluster grand mal seizures again from 1am until 6:30am.

During this time I reached out to Pam several times trying to get a hold of her. When I finally did she told me that none of her dogs have health problems/have ever had seizures. She denied knowing anything about seizures in dogs. I have never posted anything negative about her, and I have never asked for money for my dog, nor have we ever asked for a replacement dog. I only wanted to seek out information to treat our boy appropriately. I have absolutely NO intentions of ever giving him up. I found this website and now am well aware that many dogs from Willow creek have tons of health problems as well.

I have the papers for our dog showing that he is a purebred and who his parents are as well. Our dog is honestly amazing, no temperament issues. He is laid back, smart, and a loving boy. It is unfortunate that he has to struggle with this.

Anonymous said...

I forgot to add- that if your dog has allergies I strongly recommend switching to a raw food diet. We get ours at the pet store. It is a big of a hassle and can be more expensive at times but all of his allergies/itching are under control and we believe that it has 100% helped his seizures.

Hi there. We have a dog from pam who is experiencing terrible allergies. I would like to speak with you more about the raw food you chose to switch to.

We buy our raw food from a local business that only sells raw food. I absolutely believe it's the best answer for any dog especially those that have allergies. I live in Durham Region. The name if the business is Herringview Raw and Natural in Ashburn, On. Just north of Brooklyn

HI! I left the comment regarding the raw food- what's your email? I can email you everything we did :)
We actually get ours from a brand called "Big Country Raw"- here is their website https://bigcountryraw.ca/

We have a one year old barbet that we purchased from Pam. While our dog has a lovely temperament, we experienced similar issues with extreme itching within weeks of bringing the puppy home. Her coat also had a musty odour within a week of getting her. It has been an incredibly expensive and stressful undertaking to determine what she is allergic to. She was better only when we took her totally off all meat and potatoes. Unfortunately this is not a sustainable solution health wise. Pam was initially somewhat helpful and then practically nonresponsive for the past 8 months, despite my request for contact via emails and phone messages. She claimed that my dog's issues are a one off. There was absolutely no offer on her part re financial compensation. To date we have spent thousands in vets bills and the pet insurance we purchased refused to pay as they said it is a pre-existing condition.
There is apparently a barbet reunion event every June that Pam hosts. Not surprisingly, we have not received an invitation this year. Does anyone know when or where it is? Would like to go to see if we can connect with other owners who have managed to resolve the allergy issues.

Hi there, not sure when you will see thus but I would love to speak with you about your experience and if you have found any resolution to the itching issues with your new pup and more about what happened with the last one. We purchased a barbet puppy last January from willow Creek waterdogs and she has struggled with extreme itchiness and food related allergies. Only time she seems to improve is when we remove her off all meat. My name is Anita and my phone number is 705-321-6267. Thanks very much

I also have a Barbet with epilepsy. Pam denied knowing of any dogs with epilepsy in her line but as per the post above clearly this is not true.

Unknown said...

Has anyone had a diagnosis of Addisons or Atypical Addisons?

Anonymous said...

I posted the previous comment about my dog having epilepsy/allergies in September 2018. I am just following up with the last few comments:
- Anita I have sent you a text message.
- to the person with the Barbet with epilepsy, how long has this been going on for? What do yo guys do to manage the seizures? I am curious if there is something you are doing differently than us that can help me with my dog too.
- I have not heard of any of her dogs having Addisons... is this something that has come across in her lines as well?

Unknown said...

We are still undergoing testing to determine if our Barbet has a form of Addisons. Primary and atypical has been ruled out, now testing for tertiary Addisons the rarest form of the disease. Addisons can cause sudden collapse and death, I’m wondering if this is what happened to the beloved dog above who suddenly died. Our dog has dangerously low cortisol levels...

Thanks for this info. Currently researching breeders and found this article:

"A reputable breeder will want to be in touch with you for the dog’s lifetime and will always be willing to take back any dog they have bred if you are no longer able to care for your dog. A great breeder will always be interested in the lives of their puppies"

http://www.northrockbarbets.com/choosing-a-breeder.html

Previous Porty Owner said...

Absolutely! Reputable Breeders will tell you to bring the dog back to them if you cannot keep them and will not fall off the face of the earth after they get their money. This is typically how she operates.

Unknown said...

Last round of tests seems to confirm secondary Addisons. Being referred to an internist in Guelph to confirm before starting s lifetime commitment of medication. It is obvious by the number of issues being communicated here, and this is only those willing to speak out, that there are issues with breeding with the Breeder. I have spoken with several other Barbet breeders who confirm that there is an alarming number of dogs here that have health problems and that is not normal when they are bred properly. Also noticed other breeders do not have the bad publicity being seen here. IF YOU ARE THINKING OF PURCHASING FROM WILLIWCREEK DO YOUR HOMEWORK FIRST. CALL ITHER BREEDERS, THERE IS A REPUTABLE ONE IN STRATFORD NAMED BISCAY WATERDOGS. THRU MY RESEARCH I LEARNED THERE ARE VERY FEW BREEDERS WILLING TO BREED WHTB WILLOWCREEK WHICH SHOULD BE A RED FLAG! Limited breeding choices means greater temptation to compromise the standards. It’s unfortunate that the dogs have to suffer and large amounts of $ have to be spent giving a quality lifestyle to these dogs due to practices by the breeder that are preventable

Suzanne said...

Yes very sad what people will do for money with no care to the outcome.

Unknown said...

Is there a governing organization for which a formal complaint/concern can be brought forward? Anyone know about this? I’d prefer not to simply share stories but rather seek to have the situation changed so no other dogs or owners have to experience this

Suzanne said...

If there is I am not unaware. CKC will register any breeders who pays their fee. The best source of knowledge about a reputable breeder we found is the Portuguese Water Dog Rescue.

Anonymous said...

To all of those who have had health concerns with their dogs - I did attempt to file a complaint with the CKC. They are trying to verify my dog's pedigree and have been in touch with Pam. They sent a big disclaimer indicating that they take no responsibility for the health or quality of dogs sold through registered breeders. If any of you are interested in taking this further, I believe there is power in numbers. If there are enough of us with legitimate concerns, we can raise these concerns with the CKC directly. Please send me an email if interested please email me at lovebarbets@gmail.com.

I actually did speak with the CKC about filing a complaint against Willow Creek. They wanted $300 for even hearing the complaint. I was told that if the CKC finds in my favour, I will get the fee refunded. However, they were not able to tell me how often they have generally found in favour of the complainant. Alternatively,
I suggest that anyone who has not been able to seek a satisfactory response from either the CKC, or the breeder in question, consider contacting marketplace at CBC. Marketplace has been effective in shining a light on a number of ethically questionable business practices. I have already written to Market place about my experiences with this breeder.

Previous Porty Owner said...

I doubt you will get much help from CKC. They only register a breeder once they've paid their dues, that's about it. No investigation as to the breeders reputation or practices followed.

Unknown said...

I have sent a formal complaint to the CKC. I am willing to file complaints with any other organizations that may be able to investigate and ultimately stop the improper breeding practices that are now obviously being done here. The lack of support and communication from the Breeder to me is a huge red flag!

I purchased a barbet from Pam and she has had severe medical issues since the age of 5 months ....buyer beware!
I have connected with a couple of other customers who have had to put their sweet babies to sleep forever due to grand mal seizures...
I as well have been in contact with CKC and just like Pam they haven’t been very helpful
Next step should be CBC Marketplace, bring it to the media !
The barbet has just been recently acknowledged by the AKC so Pam is about to get more and more customers.

Attention Blog Owner : This post is dated June 2012 and it is the first post to show up on google.
Is there anyway you can update the date of this post?
The reason I ask is when you google willowcreek it shows 2012 and can be viewed as an “old post”, as such viewers skip over it thinking it’s not current and outdated however, clearly the issues are very current and up to date!

This is the CKC reply to the complaint I filed.
Part 1

The CKC as the primary registry body for purebred dogs in Canada, and like all other livestock registries in this country, is simply an adherent to the federal statute known as the Animal Pedigree Act that falls under the auspices of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. Our mandate under this Act is to register purebred dogs, maintain pedigree records, and sanction official Canadian Kennel Club shows, trials and other events.

The registration process is explicit and you may wish to visit our website at www.ckc.ca to review the Animal Pedigree Act and CKC By-laws as well as our Policy and Procedures. Basically stated, any dog advertised and sold as purebred must be registered or eligible for registration with the CKC or other registry body incorporated under the Act for the purpose of registering that specific breed. It is the responsibility of the seller to provide these papers at no additional cost to the buyer within six months from the date of sale. In order to be eligible for registration, animals must be identified by either tattoo or microchip prior to leaving the breeder’s premises.

The Animal Pedigree Act, under which the CKC functions, is not intended to provide adherents with the authority to police inhumane treatment or cruelty to animals. This is done through the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) under the Criminal Code or applicable Provincial Offences Act relating to the prescribed standards of care for animals. Complaints regarding issues of this nature must be made directly to the local SPCA by the individual complainant. Should allegations warrant an investigation, the policing body responsible for enforcement would do so on a local basis. Should a CKC member be convicted, CKC membership will be terminated.

Purchase and/or sale transactions guarantees regarding health, temperament or any other issues are private undertakings agreed upon at the time of sale between buyer and seller. These agreements are completely separate and apart from the Animal Pedigree Act, save for the function of registration of purebred livestock, which in the case of the CKC includes recognized breeds of dogs. Please understand that the CKC does not refer or recommend individual breeders and is not a party to the purchase and/or sale of any individual purebred dog. Therefore, any and all issues arising because of the death or health/temperament concerns must be addressed through civil court. Should either party deem it necessary to litigate an issue, it is dealt with directly between the individuals involved in the transaction; CKC does not act as a facilitator for such matters.

Disappointed_Customer said...

Part 2
A common misconception is that breeders are in some way "licensed" or “registered” by the CKC; this is not the case. A breeder may reserve a unique kennel name for the purpose of identifying their dogs’ origin. A reserved kennel name is simply that, a name not a license. Beyond fulfilling the legal requirements of the Animal Pedigree Act for registration purposes, the CKC does not and cannot control breeding practices at this time and will never be in a position to predict the future of any individual dog. A responsible breeder, however, can certainly work diligently towards high standards and good quality animals with some positive sense as to the dogs’ future. The quality of any animal is, and always has been, in the hands of the individual breeder from whom the dog was originally purchased. Many thousands of healthy, happy dogs are bought in Canada every year but we realize that tragic circumstances do occur and nothing after the fact can truly address the inconvenience and, in some cases, the genuine loss that has occurred.

In an effort to expand our role and mission beyond that of a registry body and a recording facility for shows, trials and events, the CKC has identified certain initiatives that are to be undertaken. The following are just a few of the priorities the CKC has set, which we believe will promote the welfare of purebred dogs:

1. Development of a breeder education program to assist breeders in developing a healthy and well defined breeding program through expanded knowledge.
2. Development of a voluntary advanced registry to promote the health of dogs (sound mind and sound body) and the betterment of breeds.
3. Development of a breeder/kennel accreditation program whereby breeders would voluntarily adhere to specific standards and agree to submit to inspection of their breeding facilities in order to receive accreditation.

These types of national programs take an enormous amount of commitment to develop but through diligence and the willing participation of responsible breeders, in time the problems we deal with today might one day be in the past.

Every member of the CKC is bound by a Code of Ethics and CKC member breeders are specifically bound by a Code of Practice. The Code of Practice for CKC Member Breeders is a culmination of considerable consultation and effort by many individuals over the years and clearly sets out mandatory standards and requirements relating to the proper maintenance, breeding, selling and overall protection of their chosen breeds.

Thank you so much for posting that!!! I appreciate whoever contacted the CKC.

I wanted to give you all a brief update. I posted a comment on this blog in September 2018 about contacting Pam regarding my dog having seizures/ epilepsy and she denied knowing anything about health conditions. He sadly had a sudden, traumatic, and tragic death because of his health illness just two months ago. The vets said it was extremely likely it was genetic, possibly even from a brain tumour. We did do everything we possibly could for him- He was our baby (we have no children) and only 3 years old. We miss him everyday.

Also, just as an update now- because we have been more active on this blog, when you google "Willow Creek Water Dog" + anything such as "health", "epilepsy", "allergies", and "seizures" this is one of the FIRST links that comes up on google. I know it isn't much, and we all want to see more change happen but this really is a big step for anyone searching for this breeder.

Thank you to everyone on here for your support.

Hello, I wanted to reach out with our experience with Pam and Willowcreek water dogs. We purchased a male Barbet puppy from Pam 3 years ago. She seemed welcoming and knowledgeable about the breed and her dogs, turns out we were fooled by appearances. From the get go our dog has had SEVERE ALLERGIES. Excessive itching, biting at his skin left him with raw welts and blisters around his neck and sides. He cannot be bathed in any dog shampoo no matter how mild as it cause massive inflammation and causes him to lick and scratch to the point of weeping open wounds, its absolutely awful.

At first we tried different foods hoping it was something in his diet, turns out he is allergic to ALL PROTEIN. He is on a vegan diet but it still hasn't fixed the issue, he's allergic to potatoes as well which is tough as most vegetarian foods rely on potato as a source of bulk. We have him on a very expensive injection nerve blocker called CYTOPOINT which worked very well the first month but sadly has stopped being as effective recently. This is so frustrating as his constant scratching and licking drives him and the rest of us insane. His coat is obviously extremely greasy and waxy as a result of his behaviour and without being able to properly bath him he smells quite awful most of the time and you don't really want to pet him which is sad. The only positive is his temperment, he's very sweet and loving, its just difficult to snuggle a dog with a major skin condition. We are at a loss as to what to do next. I have contacted CBC marketplace and I am hoping that they will do something about Pam and put a stop to this happening to other families. Thanks for listening and if anyone can offer advice please feel free to reach out. Ashleigh

We purchased a Barbet that was from KY, USA BUT was a Pam dog and she took the dog back to Canada and bred it for the owner in KY. Not knowing about the unethical Pam H or her changing names for her kennel- we were assured all health testing was done on the litters =NOPE! She doesn’t show often or at all either another red flag. She doesn’t return calls and if confronted LIES! She’s not testing Barbet litters for PRA etc. the result = we have a sweet Barbet who has PRA and at 5 now is slowly going blind. People don’t realize how important health testing is. It’s expensive so apparently she often skips it. Also- PRA runs high up to 40% in the breed- that’s directly from Judy D President of Barbet Club of America. They don’t advertise this about the Barbet do they?!!! She is a PUPPY MILL !! Needs to be shut down but they are LAX in Canada. Puppy mills ( like Berniedoodles) all over 🍁 Canada. Disgusting 🤮

I am so so sorry you had to go through that. Similar situation happened to us when we bought out PWD without knowing about unethical practices and changing names of the kennel. My poor PWDs life was cut too short (he was only 3) because of a brain tumour and seizures. Your Barbet is lucky to have a loving family that will take good care.

Pam sold a dog to a friend of mine. She said the dog was 4 and had had 2 litters. Now it turns out the dog is 7 years old and has been bred many times. The vet said the lump on the dog's teet may be cancerous. This woman is not to be trusted.
